Chapter 10

Clover rolled across the floor as the fireball exploded against her bed. Florencia screamed in rage. Clover jumped to her feet and watched as her bed went up in flames.

“You’re going to burn the whole house down!” Clover screamed. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

“I can control the fire,” said Florencia. “It’s mine to command.”

Clover backed away in terror as the flames on her bed seemed to writhe and creep towards her like fingers. She beseeched her friend with her eyes to stop, but the heat was becoming intense. It was almost unbearable.

“What are you?” Clover asked.

“I’m here to kill you for fucking my boyfriend!” Florencia screamed.

“Oh no you’re not, you crazy bitch,” said Clover, leaping towards Florencia, slamming into her. The surprise and shock seemed to cause the flames in her bedroom to vanish as the two of them crashed into the upstairs hallway.

“I was trying to go and see my dying mother!” Clover screamed, straddling Florencia and punching her in the face. “If she dies before I get there...”

“I hope she dies!” Florencia spit out. “And the name’s Paloma!”

She’s told me her real name. She really does intend to kill me.

The fire in her eyes...

As Clover went in for another punch she felt something spark in her hair. She screamed, realizing her hair was on fire. Florencia, or Paloma, pushed her aside and kicked her in the stomach.

“I am a proud xaphan!” Paloma roared, grabbing Clover by the hair, which was burning away. “You will not beat me!”

She slammed Clover’s head against the wall, making her feel faint. The last thing she saw before passing out was Paloma’s face, bathed in a halo of flames, cackling like the demon from hell she truly was.

Paloma let Clover sink to the floor, letting the flames go out on the adulterer’s head in the process. The fight had felt good. She hadn’t had a proper to-the-death fight before, and it had been glorious. It was time to burn this girl to ashes and dance on her remains.

“What have you done?” Adrian asked.

She turned to look at him. He still looked tired, but alert.

“Do you want to watch as I burn her?” Paloma asked him.

“Keep her alive,” Adrian insisted.

She crossed her arms. “Why? She deserves to die.”

“Her father is part of the council,” said Adrian. “If you kill her, you’ll bring the wrath of the council down on you. You still want to be covert in what you’re doing here, right?”

She stared down at the unconscious girl, a girl who she thought had been a friend, her very first friend. The bitch deserved everything coming to her and more, but Adrian was right. She wasn’t ready to confront the sheriff directly yet. She still had more plans for him.

“What do we do?” she asked him. “She knows my real name. She knows I’m a demon.”

“Can’t you control her with your demon powers?” Adrian asked.

“They don’t work on her.”

She could see the look in his eyes. Despite the fact that she was controlling him and suppressing certain memories, he still managed to care for other people.
